In a poignant look at the Alberta Tar Sands project and the community of Fort McMurray, Alberta, David Suzuki investigates the development of the largest oil deposit outside of Saudi Arabia, the environmental impact, and effects on the local Mikisew Cree First Nations population. With oil prices continuing to rise, major oil companies are recovering oil from the Alberta Oil Sands at record rates. The vast majority of oil and natural gas produced in this area is sold in U.S. markets. But what are the environmental and human costs of this development? This program explores the effects of oil sands development on local and global environments, and on the city of Fort McMurray. It also asks viewers to think critically about the role and responsibility of governments, oil companies, and consumers. This program is updated from a previous Nature of Things program — When Is Enough Enough?
