Beyond the Veil

Westerners often see the hijab, or "modest dress," of Muslim women as a cultural barrier. Middle East correspondent Anna-Maria Tremonti herself found the dark overcoat and veil intimidating until she got to know the women beyond the veil. Tremonti spoke to the women of Iran, a nation which seems to have drawn a curtain of isolation around itself. While their faith promises equal opportunity for men and women, is this the case in the world's only theocracy? Spending time with Iran's teens and professional women, Tremonti discovered highly educated women with ambitions matching those of Western women. And she discovered that today a quiet revolution is sweeping over Iran. This program looks at government enforced social codes, as Iranians ponder whether Islam should be so dominant in shaping who people are and how they think.
